 'HARRY’S CHRISTMAS SPIRIT' – CHRISTMAS FOR KIDS CHILDREN’S HOSPICE TOUR 2019

 

 

Casting Breakdown

 

We are looking for performers for the Christmas for Kids 2019 Tour of 'Harry's Christmas Spirit'. These will join returning members of previous C4K casts to form three teams of three performers, which will each tour to approximately eighteen children's hospices & related venues during the month of December.

Please also include a COVERING LETTER stating why you would like to work with C4K, and including any relevant skills and experience of working with children and/or children with special needs. Please also state the role/s you would like to audition for, and if you would like to be considered as a Team Leader (see details below).

Production:  Harry's Christmas Spirit

Dates (performances, rehearsal, etc.)

AUDITIONS: Monday 14th & Saturday 19th October, Central London.

REHEARSALS:  Monday 14th– Friday 29th Nov, Mon-Fri, 12.30-7pm. Total of twelve days rehearsal. Rehearsal location: Archway, N London. Fee for rehearsals: Company wage of £375 per week.

PERFORMANCES:  Approximately eighteen performances for each team between the dates of Saturday 30th November - Saturday 31st December.

NO PERFORMANCES on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Fees for performances: See Character Breakdowns.

 

Production location: Children's hospices and related venues in the UK (Touring). Our outreach this year goes as far as Scotland, Wales and covers all of England.

 

Please note we cannot employ any performer who does not possess a valid DBS certificate. Performers will be required to show this at the audition stage.

 

 

Role 1:  Performer (All genders)

A highly skilled actor-singer, to play and puppeteer Harry - the central character of the story. Harry has a dry wit and can be occasionally grumpy, but must be instantly likeable. Requires a characterful singing voice and good comic timing. Ability to present a regional accent would be ideal.

Vocal range:  Mezzo Soprano or Baritone

Puppetry skills useful, but not essential as training will be given. Good general musicality with experience in harmony singing essential, and instrumental skills useful. 

Car drivers preferred with a full UK driving licence (manual) as driving may be required. Please let us know if you have your own car.

Pay category:  Non-Equity - £100 per show (approx. 18 shows)

Expenses:  All travel and own room accommodation covered when staying away from London. Own London base required. 

Per Diems provided for performance and travel days in line with Equity Outdoor Touring guidelines.

 

Christmas for Kids welcomes applications from all ethnicities, disabilities, ages and genders.  

Due to the very specific nature of C4K's work and our unique audience comprising children with Profound Multiple Learning Difficulties, children on the Autistic Spectrum and children with life-limiting illnesses, successful applicants will need to demonstrate emotional maturity, empathy, enthusiasm for working with children who are both poorly and well, and an extremely positive attitude towards the environment and what is required of them whilst there. They will receive emotional support and preparation from the creative team prior to commencing and throughout the tour. All performers will also receive Child Safeguarding training during rehearsals.

 

 

Role 2:  Performer (All genders)

A highly skilled actor-singer, to play and puppeteer Benson, Maurice the Monkey and to play Harry's friend in the search for Christmas Spirit. The successful applicants will be able to co-create these characters, utilising a range of accents, character voices and physicality. This role requires excellent comic timing with great vocal strength and versatility. An good ear for accents and the command of up to three differing accents/voices essential.

Vocal range:  Mezzo Soprano or Baritone. 

Puppetry skills useful, but not essential as training will be given. Good general musicality with experience in harmony singing essential, and instrumental skills useful.

Role 3:  Nutcracker/Swing (All genders)

An organised, reliable and personable performer with the capability to cover Roles 1 & 2. This team member will play Nutcracker, who assists with prop distribution and interaction with the audience, and general smooth running of the show before, during and after the performance. Nutcracker is mostly a non-speaking/mime role, but with full singing, movement and audience interaction, as well as covering duties.

Excellent multi-tasking and awareness skills essential, and computer literacy useful as Nutcracker operates the sound throughout the show.

Team Leaders: 

We will appoint one Team Leader per team who will have excellent communication, organisation and numeric skills, as duties will include arranging pick-ups and drop offs, liaising with the care team at each hospice, taking responsibility for their team’s welfare throughout the tour, and allocating Per Diems. For this added responsibility, the Team Leader will receive an extra £25 remuneration per show.
