There are 49,000 children and young people in the UK living with a life-threatening or life-limiting condition, and over 50 children's hospices in the UK. Some of these are funded privately; most have some government or local authority funding. They are able to take some children on trips and outings but very few of them have the disposable funds to pay for performances such as ours. We compliment the amazing medical and care work the hospices provide by bringing an engaging, lively and stimulating show of the highest artistic merit into the hospices to entertain children, families and carers, who often find it difficult during the festive period.
Our 2020 Show - 'Benson's Christmas Letter'
Our 2020 Tour
- In response to Covid-19
In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, we were unable to deliver the large tour we had initially set out for C4K in 2020. Every year C4K tries to expand its outreach, and this year we were hoping to visit hospices/hospitals and SEND schools in Northern Ireland for the first time. Due to the amount of forward planning required, the vulnerable nature of our audiences, and the uncertain climate, we decided to delay this expansion until 2022 at the earliest. But we were not to be beaten, and we still wanted to get to all the children's hospices in the UK, so we came up with... a Digital show!
About the Show
We are brought a digital version of our show ‘Benson’s Christmas Letter’ to over 70 children's hospice venues and community groups across the UK that we had intended to tour to live this year. Due to the flexibility of the digital model, we are also distributing the show to over 90 SEND schools throughout the UK too! The show was watched over 700 times by classes, hospices and families in the comfort of their own homes. We are thrilled about how the digital show enabled a huge expansion of our outreach, under such challenging circumstances and restrictions.
In August, we rehearsed 3 actors, who had all previously toured live with C4K, then filmed in September and October in a Green Screen studio - combining live theatre, animation and videography to create a vivid, exciting and engaging show specially designed for children with complex needs and life-limiting illness.
The show featured our signature blend of harmony singing, music, storytelling and puppetry. The interactive element of our live shows remained in direct address, POV sequences, and the use of props, instruments and light stimuli available in the hospices and schools - as directed by an accompanying Resource E-pack.
Animated graphics and colourful backdrops stimulated our audiences visually, and we offered versions with captioning and an accompanying script for anyone who would like to sign along with the show.
Our hospice care team contacts have started to feed back to us: - "We watched it yesterday and the children absolutely loved it! Especially the interactive elements 🙂 we made lots of fake snow and had a great time with the jingle bells!" Play Specialist, Zoe's Place Baby Hospice

I am excited for all those young people who get to experience this year's magical show."
